Philips Hue is worth the investment to spruce up an apartment

In Home, Technology by Heidi Bada0 Comments

My ordinary apartment became awesome when I added smart bulbs After a year of living with Philips Hue in my home, I already can’t live without it. I’m glad I decided on this brand of smart bulbs. Let me tell you about them in case you don’t know. They are LED bulbs that install into your regular light fixtures, like your usual bulbs (including E26, PAR16, GU10, and BR30) except that these ones talk to a Wi-Fi hub. Philips Hue and other smart bulb brands usually begin as a kit that includes a few bulbs and a hub. It is indeed …

Suspension trainer moves to try this weekend

In Fitness and Health by Heidi Bada0 Comments

This week flew by for me. Earlier in the week I found some suspension trainer moves suitable for the Jungle Gym XT equipment I use. My day job kept me busy, followed by a cold this week, so I’m just going to be quick and share a few videos I found that are simple and fun to do. With nice weather coming (occasionally) at this time of year, it’s totally possible to use a suspension trainer at playgrounds. Some Youtube hosts recommended going at dusk, when playgrounds tend to be empty. I haven’t tried attaching my Jungle Gym XT to any of …

What should my blog be about?

In Fitness and Health, Heidi's Updates, Life by Heidi Bada0 Comments

I’m considering a change on my blog. I’ve been blogging for over a few years now. This one is probably my sixth blog. The only other one that is still in production is my computer lessons website, computerlessonsbyheidi.com. By now I was hoping that it would be more obvious what I should be blogging about, as a fitness trainer. No single thing has stood out to me, however. There are many aspects of fitness that I love to read about and then share helpful tips from. I also like to blog about art, computers, and even news events such as …

Podcast 5: My thoughts about nutrition fads

In Nutrition, Podcast episodes by Heidi Bada1 Comment

I found a great article about nutrition fads today. It brought up some of the same things I wanted to podcast about. So I just added some thoughts that flowed following reading a blog post about nutrition by Dr. Ann Miller. Read the article, then listen to my podcast. In the blog post, Dr. Miller talks about several nutrition topics including juicing, fasting, and the old and unfounded idea of drinking 8 glasses of water a day. I talked about this in my podcast, covering the eight glasses of water issue, my wish to obtain a Vitamix someday, and much …

Reynolds High School is a must-try for roller skaters

In Fitness and Health, Videos by Heidi Bada0 Comments

Excellent skate surfaces at Reynolds The basketball court is almost perfect. The pavement as smooth as you can get in a paved basketball court. No dips. No cracks. The pavement adjacent to the basketball court is skate-able too and only has minimal debris which can be picked up as needed. I skate with leather gloves on so that’s never a big deal. The reason I’m blogging about this today is because I just released a new video of myself practicing my beginner skaters skills there. The video is on my YouTube channel, and you can find it below as well (if using Safari). …

The exam was a definite success!

In Fitness and Health by Heidi Bada0 Comments

To put it mildly, I passed my Certified Personal Trainer exam. It took every last penny, but I traveled to Vancouver to BCIT to write the exam. I was stressed and now I need a vacation. The beaches there were awesome; I tried to enjoy myself! I stayed in Vancouver for three days, one to acclimatize myself, and one to recover from the exam, and the final day at the beach and Stanley Park area. I stumbled upon a movie in the park, so I stayed the whole evening and just chilled in a comfy chair for $20. A good …

May and June personal update

In Heidi's Updates by Heidi Bada0 Comments

For several months I’ve been studying for an exam in certified personal training. I realize that I haven’t blogged or created any new content in over a month. I haven’t dropped out of the scene; I’ve just been studying. I do other work as well, mainly using the computer for freelance work. I’m looking forward to taking the exam and having new options available in my career. I don’t know exactly what balance of work I will end up with. I enjoy working in general, and it’s been a pleasant experience (with hard work) updating my knowledge of fitness training …

Podcast 2: Orange and dark green vegetables, and Canada’s Food Guide website

In Fitness and Health by Heidi Bada0 Comments

According to Canada’s Food Guide website, we need to be sure to get orange and dark green vegetables frequently into our meals. Before we get into some of my notes, make sure you understand that I’m not a dietitian; I’m studying to become a certified personal trainer. I use nutrition information on a daily basis, as a diabetic, so I have special relationship with food. It sometimes makes me ill, and other times saves my life. As a student of sociology (BA, 2009), I also study things like barriers to health, and adherence to medical advice. At the end of this …
